Older, happier but still Sting: The former bass player and singer for the Police has dumped his pop-music focus and now has a sound that draws from jazz, funk, reggae and ethnic music. But Sting, who comes to GM Place Friday with k.d. lang, is still thrilled that a song from his latest album, Brand New Day, managed to crack the top 10. Multipurpose celebrity Gordon Sumner, a.k.a. Sting, is at that midway vantage point where he can take stock of the continuum that has been his life so far...

Trudie Styler, wife of Sting, mother-of-four, actress, producer and environmental activist, is patron of the Tibet Foundation's Peace Garden Appeal. The two-and-a-half acrea garden, which was opened by the Dalai Lama a year ago, is set in the grounds of the Imperial War Museum in London...

Police Reunion! - The members of The Police grant their first joint interview since parting ways more than 15 years ago. "I think if we came back..," Andy Summers pauses, fortifies himself with another gulp of wine, then plunges ahead,"...we could wipe the floor with every f***in' little band on the planet..."

More than the Sumner of his rock'n'roll past - All grown-up: At 48, Sting finds that being an adult is more important than being a pop star. Sting has left the rock'n'roll sandpit to become a joined-up songwriter. These days Sting doesn't sound much like a rock'n'roller. Words such as discipline and responsibility litter his conversation. "I know I sound like an old fart," he laughs with a refreshing lack of self-consciousness. "But if my lifestyle doesn't tie in with being elegantly wasted and not giving a f***, then that's too bad..."

Ireland was a real inspiration to me, it helped my music: When Sting steps out on stage in front of a 10,000 sell-out gig at The Point in Dublin tonight, he'll be feeling right at home. For he lived here during what he regards as one of the most "inspirational" periods of his life. And he admitted: "It is great to be back again. "I played here several times in the past both with The Police and also when I went solo so Ireland is always up there with my favourite places. In fact, I lived in the west of Ireland for a while in the late Seventies and it was a real inspiration to me - and also I would like to think it has helped my music..."

Sting - Bring On The Note: Ask anyone who Sting is, and the most likely answer will be, "He's a singer." Few non-musicians understand that Sting's talents as a bassist and his influence on pop bass are as important as his singer/songwriter gifts, if not more so. In fact, most people know more about his legendary tales of sexual prowess than his knack for a tasty groove. Sure, Sting's bass lines are more subdued now than in his days as an angry young quasi-punk with the Police - but he can still pump out a mean bottom, as he does all over his latest release, 'Brand New Day'...

The angst is always with you: Big halls don't force Sting to play heavy metal. In Hamburg, he counts on the might of the subtle. Although "Der Stachel" (the German word for Sting) stings less than he did in the blessed days of Police, the Englishman with a temporary apartment in New York does not care much about it. Sting's songs have a relieving difference in their quality compared to Mainstream-Pop. As part of his world tour, Sting stops in Hamburg today (Sporthalle, 8 pm). Tom Fuchs and Manfred Müller talked to the musician before the concert...

Ambitious? Whatever for? A father and a musician: Sting comes to the Velodrom today, with songs from his new album 'Brand New Day' and with the hits from his long career. The career of Matthew Gordon Sumner, better known as Sting, began a quarter of a century ago. As a member of The Police in the late 1970's, the Englishman belonged to the so-called "New Wave" movement of influential musicians of the time. In 1984, at the height of the group's success, Sting disbanded The Police. His solo career started the following year. Since then he has sold well over 80 million records. Last fall Sting released the album 'Brand New Day'. Today he is coming to the Velodrom...
